So the other day as I was reading up on the various blogs I follow, I came across this post about coffee tables on Apartment Therapy. In it, they posed the question Whats On Your Coffee Table?

That got me thinking, is there really a right and wrong way to decorate your own coffee table? Or do you even need to?

So, I personally love a beautiful decorative tray on a coffee table.  They look great with a stack of art books, one or two small decorative accessories and a small flower vase or plant.  I hate seeing remote controls and coasters, but those are the things that usually end up on my coffee table at home.  If possible, I recommend a keeping these things in a drawer or in a basket tucked away under the coffee table or side tables in a living room.

These industrial tables, either salvaged or made to look salvaged, are one of the hottest furniture trends.  They’re selling in several high-end stores – Restoration Hardware’s version costs several hundred dollars.  Instead to spending that kind of dough – make one yourself – it’s a basic woodworking project and the materials don’t have cost a lot.   

Look at Popular Woodworking’s plans — they used an old shipping pallet and purchased the wheels from an industrial supply company — easy and cheap.

The best part about an industrial coffee table:  you can put feet up on it or spill drinks all over it – who cares, it will just add to the distressed patina.
