The flowers of Plumeria ‘India’ are yellow to orange enhanced by strong red veining. The flowers are of heavy texture with good keeping quality. Scent of the flowers is strong and sweet. Plumeria ‘India’ is a fast growing plant with strong and thick branches. The picture at the end of this post shows Plumeria ‘India’ flowering on May 15, 2012 in Chicago, plant hardiness zone 5. This plumeria plant, with no inflorescence showing, was received and planted on April 4, 2012 as an unrooted cutting. Soon after planting the inflorescence, flower stalk, emerged and continued to develop. As of May 15, 2012 Plumeria ‘India’ is anchored in the pot indicating root development. Copyright © Bob Walsh

There are so many ways to restore or reclaim old ugly furniture. Whether you have furniture hand me downs that need work, or have found a beat up piece of furniture with good bones in the thrift store, here are some great transformations to inspire you.

1. 1. Decoupaged Yellow Dresser Paint and cheery yellow fabric make this 45 year old dresser better than new.

2. 2. Denim Covered Couch Grab a bunch of thrifted jeans and sew up a patchwork slipcover. Leave some of the pockets in for handy remote control storage.

3. 3. Side Table Transformations Here are two great reconned tables: one is hand painted with a beautiful damask pattern, and one has a wonderful mosaic top.

4. 4. Marble Mosaic Top Take an inexpensive thrift store table, paint it a bright color, add brightly colored flat backed marbles, and you’ve got a one of a kind showpiece for your home.

Flick through any glossy interiors mags, Pinterest boards, style blogs and catalogues, and you’re confronted with shades from swansdown to snowdrop, chalk to cotton wool; it’s a bit like the audience at fashion shows where everyone’s wearing black.

I’m beginning to find this a little boring – but can’t quite bring myself to break open a tin of coloured paint and redecorate.

I’m slowly daring to deviate from mindless monochrome by introducing small and inexpensive splashes of colour – graphic-print cushions, vases, a teapot, a small striped throw – and am debating whether to go a stage further and paint my wooden kitchen chairs in primary shades. Well, I can always sla

Q: About every two to four months my son wakes up with a series of small, red, round itchy bites. They are usually in groups of two to six and generally on his back, chest, groin or shoulders. We suspect these are bedbug bites, but there is absolutely no sign of the bugs.

His mattress and box springs are pristine as are sheets and pillows. I wash all his bedding weekly in hot water. We encased his mattress in a bug bag six weeks ago, but he got a fresh cluster of bites last week.

Could it be something other than bedbugs? It’s not mosquitoes. What’s the best way to get rid of them?

It could be bird mites if you have pigeons or other birds in your house or rat mites if there are rats in the house. If mites are a possibility, then I would treat the room with Greenbug for Indoors, which is effective against mites but harmless to people and pets.

Industrial Designer and Rhode Island School of Design alum Mark Ellingwood has recently launched his new line of stylized contemporary clocks which can currently be seen and purchased through kickstarter, the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects. Mark likes to use a variety of materials and construction methods to create contrast and complexity within the form to produce even greater depth.

He utilizes the laser because of its ability to cleanly and accurately cut a variety of materials into shapes that are difficult if not impossible to create with other conventional cutting methods. He says that he always has had a fascination with geometric forms and as an industrial designer he feels compelled to look for ways to incorporate these pure forms into functional art. Learn more about Mark and his project.

This seaside cottage on Irelands east coast by Dublin studio A2 Architects is intended for year-round use.

The house is made of two volumes, clad in untreated douglas fir, that rest on a cast concrete platform. Green grass roofs shield the interior from harsh weather, and visually connect the house into the patchwork of potato fields behind it.

Large windows front and back open out to the sea in front, and to potato fields in the back. Radiant underfloor heating and super-tight insulation make the house comfortable for winter holidays as well as summer.

In the back of the house, a sheltered evening terrace enjoys west sun and views of the horizon through the living room.

Running down the center of the house, a light-box corridor skylight connects the two wooden halves, separated into public and private.

A cast terrazzo fireplace anchors the extremely minimal interior of one side, simply one large living and dining space. Cl

Record-shattering temperatures for first day of spring 2012.

Here are three numbers regarding Ann Arbor, Michigan for March 20, the official last day of winter: 43ºF, 63ºF and 81ºF.

43ºF is the average/normal high temperature.

63ºF was the previous record high temperature set in 2003. Incidentally, 2003 was the fourth hottest year on record.

Q: We have a lot of earwigs coming in and would like to stop them. We have a company that sprays the inside and outside of our house every month, but he can’t seem to stop the earwigs. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Populations generally build up around foundations. They usually enter homes when it is very dry outside and they are looking for moisture. Female earwigs lay about 30 eggs and she guards them until they hatch.

She will pick up each egg and clean the fungus off it regularly. When they hatch, she will protect the nymphs until they are old enough to take care of themselves.

You can trap earwigs by setting out rolled up newspapers that they will crawl into and not leave. Or you can use a piece of corrugated cardboard. You can also trap them by putting out tuna fish cans with a 1/2 inch of vegetable oil, raisins, beer, bacon grease or damp bread crumbs.

Not all of us have enough Kodachrome slides to make a window treatment, but we can all get our hands on enough paper to make confetti curtains. The squares are cut or punched out of paper of differing weights and then sewn together. They’re hung from a tension rod via curtain clips. I’d opt for these from IKEA, which are a schmeasily $2.99 for a package of 10. Visit BHG for more details about the project.
