For Christmas this year, my mom got me a new Slow Cooker, which was at the top of my wish list. My old Crock Pot slow cooker was not programmable and, as a result, I often over-cooked our dinners. My old Crock Pot (only 5 years old) also cooked much hotter than one would expect, the “warm” setting acting, more like “low”, would continue to cook the food much beyond desired. Suffice to say, this was a gift I was excited to receive and my old Crock Pot was sent quickly to find a new home at the local Good Will. I have been very pleased with this new, Hamilton Beach slow cooker and would highly recommend it!

  • Thermometer probe for meat

January 10th, 2011iPad App Review | DIY Toolbox

We were recently contacted by the developer of a new iPad app designed to “get things done”. The DIY Toolbox is a utility application that includes a measurement converter, various calculators and a to do list. After spending some time using the app, here’s what we thought.

DIY Toolbox for iPad

Note: choice of units can be set in the preferences.

Convert The Convert tab can change feet into meters, inches into millimeters, and yards into feet. The large calculator-esque buttons make it easy to enter numbers and clear fields. These are common conversions but I’d like to see more. There’s a lot of screen real-estate on a iPad, and apps should take advantage. Entering values is a little kludgy too. For insta

I’ve been writing a lot about LED home lighting recently. Previous posts have covered how LED bulbs compare to CFL’s and purchasing LED bulbs for your home. The big question that hasn’t been answered is how well do LED light bulbs perform? Even with the amazing energy savings and unprecedented lifespan, consumers won’t convert to LED’s unless they put out good light. This post will cover my experience with several different types of LED lights available at The Home Depot. This post does not cover all the options available but should help point you in the right direction.

Looking for a creative gift idea for the home improver in your life? Last year, Ethan came up with a list of handyman gifts that are easy to purchase online and will ship in time for the holiday. Here’s another idea we think many handymen (and handywomen!) might enjoy – a basic plumbing tool kit. You can build the kit for about $40-$50 from the local big box department store.

Why a plumbing kit? We always like receiving practical gifts that show a little thought, and this one certainly does. You’ll have to assemble the pieces yourself (we haven’t seen any pre-made plumber’s gift baskets at Hallmark!) Plus, you’ll be giving a gift that will encourage your DIYer to take on a new task! This stuff isn’t hard to find, either. It’s usually organized in a single isle at the store.

But you say your handyman’s never done plumbing? You could also pic
