March 8th, 2012Goldfinches on the up

Just spotted this news item on the BBC site:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17269770 Apparently goldfinches are now one of the ten most common birds to be seen in gardens, which is good news for them and for backyard twitchers!

A while back, we responded to a real estate agent who wanted to know how to fix an old two-story home with severely sloping floors. The home had just been newly drywalled and painted to get it ready for sale, but all the sprucing up in the world could not mask its major structural deficiencies.

We stopped short of suggesting the owner tear it down and start anew. But our list of proposed fixes was truly a parade of horribles, from replacing the foundation to possibly fixing leaking water and gas lines to re-rocking and painting. We advised that if our agent represented a buyer, “walk away,” and if representing the seller, disclose, disclose, disclose.

Our answer triggered an e-mail from a structural engineer who has taken issue with some of our past suggestions, but not this time. He wrote, “I’ve been pretty critical of some of your evaluations/recommendations in the past, so I just wanted to let you know that I think today’s column is spot on!

MANILA, Philippines — One of the longest running furniture trade shows in Asia will hold its 55th edition here next month.

Manila Fame 2012 will take place March 14-17 at the SMX Convention Center.

The show, which started in 1983, usually is held each March and October. Last fall it was combined with the CebuNext furniture show and the Bijoux Cebu jewelry show. Those two events will continue to be part of the March event.

Featuring a total of 223 exhibitors, Manila Fame is expected to draw visitors from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America.

The March event also will highlight globally inspired design trends with three distinct themes: Paradiso, Tribal Fusion and Stone Age. <
